2008 Beijing Olympics Results: Mariel Zagunis Claims First Gold for U.S.

Mariel Zagunis became the first U.S. athlete to claim a gold medal during the 2008 Beijing Olympics after capturing the women’s saber fencing finals 15-8 over fellow American Sada Jacobson.



While becoming the first American to capture gold at Beijing was significant it was her gold medal performance in 2004 that put Zagunis on the map. That medal made her the first American to win the event in 100 years.



Now the Americans are stacked as they swept the medal ceremonies with Becca Ward nabbing bronze after beating Russia's Sofiya Velikaya 15-14.
