US Treasury chief to meet Chinese FM

US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in Washington on Wednesday, a Treasury official said Monday.

The official did not provide details, such as the topics of discussions between the two officials.

Yang's visit was also not included in Geithner's public schedule of events released early Monday.

The State Department confirmed Yang would be coming to Washington, saying details were still being worked out.

"He's coming. We're just working out the details," department spokesman Robert Wood told AFP.

Yang's visit comes in the wake of a tense naval standoff in the South China Sea between the two powers on Sunday.

The Pentagon said Monday that five Chinese vessels maneuvered dangerously close to a US Navy ship, approaching within 25 feet of the unarmed surveillance ship.

The State Department said it had protested to Chinese authorities over the incident which occurred about 75 miles 120 kilometers from China's Hainan Island.
