SAN'A, Yemen – Yemen's Foreign Ministry has denied reports that Yemeni inmates at Guantanamo Bay prison will be transferred to terrorist rehabilitation centers in Saudi Arabia.
Sunday's statement says Yemen and the United States are still discussing the transfer of the almost 100 detainees back to their country.
U.S. officials have said negotiations on the fate of the Yemeni inmates have been under way for months, and that they have stalled over a Saudi demand that Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh publicly endorse the transfer to the kingdom. The officials say Saleh has refused to do so fearing a backlash among his people.
A Saudi official declined comment Sunday, saying the issue concerns Yemen only.
