US cancels trips to Pakistan's Peshawar

The US embassy in Pakistan on Tuesday warned citizens of a security threat in Peshawar and ordered government personnel to cancel visits to the northwest city following a string of militant attacks.

The embassy told citizens that US personnel "have been instructed to cancel all travel to and from Peshawar for the next 24 hours in response to a security threat," spokesman Lou Fintor said.

Fifteen people were killed and hundreds more wounded in four consecutive bomb blasts in Peshawar and another northwest town last Thursday.

The city was also hit by two car bombs last month, raising fears that militants are seeking revenge for Pakistan's latest offensive against Taliban fighters in the region.

Security forces have been battling insurgents in three northwest districts for more than a month in an offensive strongly backed by Washington, which fears Taliban militants in Pakistan may be plotting attacks on the West.

The US special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, is due in Pakistan on Wednesday, where he will assess the situation of about 2.4 million displaced people who have fled the military offensive.
