UN envoy arrives in Myanmar

YANGON, Myanmar – Officials say the U.N. special envoy to Myanmar has arrived in the country to pave the way for a possible visit by U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon.

The visit is likely to be politically delicate coming during the contentious trial of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The U.N. has not disclosed any details of envoy Ibrahim Gambari's visit.

An official said the envoy arrived Friday morning in Yangon, the commercial capital, and was driven to his hotel.

He was scheduled to travel later in the day to the capital of Naypyitaw to meet government officials, said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the visit.
