Obama says North Korea must respond to diplomacy

CAEN, France – President Barack Obama is indicating that North Korea has tested the limits of patient diplomacy calculated to persuade the communist nation to get rid of its nuclear weapons.

In remarks to reporters in a joint appearance with French President Nicholas Sarkozy, Obama said Saturday that a recent nuclear test and missile launches by the North Koreas were provocative.

Obama said he prefers to take a diplomatic approach with Pyongyang. But he added that in order to continue on that path, the North Koreans must respond in what Obama called "a serious way."

He said no one should assume that the United States will continue on its current course if the North Koreans repeatedly take actions that Obama considers to be destabilizing and threatening.
