Zimbabwe prosecutors have agreed that 18 detained activists can get bail, a defence lawyer said Wednesday, one day after they were held on charges of plotting to overthrow President Robert Mugabe.
"The attorney general's office has consented that they'll be released on bail," Harrison Nkomo, a lawyer for the activists, told AFP.
"We are going to the magistrates' court to get the order for their release," which could happen later Wednesday, he added.
The activists, including leading human rights campaigner Jestina Mukoko, were detained Tuesday after their indictment on charges of scheming to overthrow Zimbabwe's long-time leader Mugabe.
Mukoko is accused of recruiting people for terror training in Botswana -- a claim rejected by Botswana as well as the MDC.
The MDC warned that the detentions threatened the survival of the country's fledgling unity government.
