Strike grounds 149 flights at Japan's ANA

A 24-hour strike by pilots at All Nippon Airways ANA forced Japan's second-largest carrier to cancel or delay more than 160 domestic flights, a company spokesman said.

"A total of 149 flights have been cancelled, with 14 flights delayed," affecting some 7,300 passengers, the official said after 610 union members went on strike from 2:45am Wednesday 1745 GMT Tuesday.

The affected flights, mostly services to provincial cities and remote islands, account for some 18 percent of ANA's domestic operations.

No international flights were affected by the dispute.

"We extend our sincere apologies... for the disruption and inconvenience caused," the company said in a statement.

The pilots, employed at four ANA group companies operating small jets and propeller planes, have been demanding training for larger aircraft and higher pay, according to a spokesman at Air Nippon, one of the four subsidiaries.

"Operations will return to normal tomorrow," as no fresh round of negotiations had been scheduled, the official said.

The ANA pilots went on strike a month ago, affecting nearly 170 domestic flights.
