Madagascar power grab a coup d'etat: EU presidency

The European Union considers the army-backed ousting of the democratically elected president in Madagascar to be a coup d'etat, the Czech EU presidency said Thursday.

"This was a coup d'etat, this was not a democratic election," Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg said after the first day of a two-day EU summit in Brussels.

"So for the moment we shall have to adopt a prudent approach, we shall have to look at it carefully and see how things develop.

"We have the example of Mauritania where there was also a coup d'etat and we did not accept that government," Schwarzenberg added.

The United States and southern African nations have already refused to recognise Madagascar's new leader, 34-year-old former disc jockey Andry Rajoelina, who ousted President Marc Ravalomanana on Tuesday.
