OLYMPICS: Results start to roll in for local athletes
Michael Barry finished ninth in the gruelling 245.4-kilometre men's cycling road race, 16 seconds back of Samuel Sanchez of Spain, who won the gold in 6:23:49.
• Fencer Olga Ovtchinnikova advanced to the round of 16 in the women's individual sabre before getting eliminated.
• Michael Winter joins his Canadian teammates in 10th place with a score of 123.70 after the dressage portion of eventing competition. Competition continues this evening and resumes Sunday morning at 6:30 a.m. (Beijing time).
• A trio of Ontario women sits in second place in the Yngling class. Skipper Jennifer Provan, of Toronto, and crew Martha Henderson, of Toronto, and Katie Abbot, of Sarnia, placed fifth and fourth, respectively, in the first two of 10 races for nine net points. They ended the day trailing only a boat from Great Britain that has five point at the early stage of a competition that ends with the medal race Aug. 16.
• Chris Cook of Toronto, a Whitby native, is fourth among 26 entered in the Finn class, behind boats from Poland (five points), the U.S. (seven) and Great Britain (11). The Royal Canadian Yacht Club sailor placed eighth and third in his two races for 11 points, likewise the first of the competition's 10 before the medal race Aug. 16.
• On the archery field in the men's individual ranking rounds, Crispin Duenas of Scarborough was 16th in a field of 64 with 664 points while John David Burnes was 50th with a score of 644. Elimination rounds begin Aug. 11 at 11 a.m. (Beijing time).
