More record times for U.S. swimmers

Three swimmers, including Michael Phelps, swam under the American record time in the preliminaries of the 100 meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic trials Wednesday morning.

Jason Lezak started the festivities by breaking his own American record in a time of 48.15 seconds, two-hundreths of a second faster than the mark he set at the trials in 2004. In the next heat Garrett Weber-Gale broke the record, swimming 47.78. Then came Phelps, who was clocked at 47.92 -- better than the American mark entering the day but not faster than Weber-Gale's new record.

Phelps swam the preliminaries strictly to establish his status as a member of the 4X100 relay team in Beijing. His coach, Bob Bowman, said he would withdraw from tonight's semifinals, because the race is just minutes before the 200 butterfly finals, in which Pehlps is favored.

Weber-Gale said he entered the race with three pieces of advice his father (Mark) gave him: "Trust in your coach. Trust in your stroke. Swim your own race."
